Congressman Sherrod Brown Defends Taiwan’s DemocracyTaiwan faces many challenges. A world that preaches democracy but panders to capitalism, as well as governments that talk about freedom yet averts their eyes when countries are threatened by larger powers. However, Taiwan has a steadfast supporter in Congressman Sherrod Brown (D-OH) who presented a robust argument in favor Taiwan’s democracy and self-determination on May 15, 2006 at the Taiwan Center, in Rosemead California. The Formosa Foundation had contacted Brown earlier in the year and requested that he deliver an address focusing on the challenges that Taiwan faces and meet members of the Los Angeles Taiwanese community. The event was co-sponsored by the North American Taiwanese Medical Association, the Taiwan Center, and the Orange County and LA County chapters of FAPA. Brown electrified the audience during the late evening discussion which touched on issues ranging from the One-China policy, to Taiwan’s inclusion in the World Health Organization to the recent snubbing of Taiwan’s President Chen’s visa request. The Congressman reiterated his commitment to a free and prosperous Taiwan and vowed to continue his work in Congress on behalf of democracy. He emphasized that “Taiwan is a real Democracy that should be supported.” During his address Brown called for a reevaluation of the U.S. One-China policy which he noted was overly influenced by business. “I disagree on our current policy relating to Taiwan and large corporations have too much influence on our China policy.” Brown told the audience that he would return to Congress and persuade his colleagues to support a letter that he would be circulating in support of Taiwan’s bid for inclusion to the World Health Organization. “It is ridiculous that the health and welfare of the citizens of the United States, and Taiwan are jeopardized by the political maneuvering of China.” “It pains me to think about what the world community is missing in terms of the contributions from Taiwan’s doctors and nurses.” Brown encouraged the audience to participate by opening the floor to questions for more than one hour and observed that as more and more members of Congress become educated on issues that are both important to Americans and Taiwanese, more and more members of Congress will stand up for Taiwan. He stated that he is optimistic that one day Taiwan will be properly recognized and supported by the United States. Brown, has served 14 years in the House of Representatives, and is currently running for Senate, is highly regarded by the Taiwanese community and is one of the four founding members of the Taiwan Congressional Caucus.
