Formosa Foundation organizes private screening of the movie Formosa Betrayed for Congressional members & staff -- Sept. 2009

An important element of the Formosa Foundation’s mission is to bring Taiwan issues to the forefront of the America political agenda. Therefore the Foundation is proud to announce that we have begun preparations for a private screening of the movie Formosa Betrayed to be shown exclusively to members of Congress and their staff in June.

This Congressional screening is an exciting and unique opportunity to share with decision makers in Washington, D.C. the powerful message about the plight of the Taiwanese people and their fight for freedom, democracy and self-determination. The event will be co-hosted by the Formosa Foundation and a bipartisan coalition of Congressional members.  MoviePhotos1

After careful consultation with Members of Congress as well as the team at Formosa Films LLC, we have decided to move the screening to the second week of September, 2009 in order to better take advantage of this exciting and unique opportunity and draw more attention to the film.

The feedback we have received suggests that by holding the screening at the beginning of the fall Congressional session we can ensure that the film gets the most possible exposure. In addition, we are working with members of Congress to build a series of other special events surrounding the film’s screening in which to draw more attention to the issue of Taiwan’s democracy. By moving the film to the fall we also have an opportunity to hold private briefings with congressional members and their staff.

Our original budget was $20,000; however, while scouting locations, we were given a quote of $40,000 which only includes the cost of the theater. Holding this event in Washington DC is costly. The Formosa Foundation is asking you to help make this groundbreaking screening possible by supporting our efforts. Donations are tax-deductible as the Formosa Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Anyone who contributes $1,000 or more will be invited as a guest of honor to the Congressional screening.

Making a donation to the Formosa Foundation is quick and easy. Our homepage has a portal through which you can make a donation using your credit card or PayPal account. Go to our home page and click on the “Make a Donation” button on the screen. You may also write a check, payable to the Formosa Foundation, and mail it to 350 S. Figueroa Street, Suite 275, Los Angeles, CA 90071.

The reality of the situation is that getting Formosa Betrayed seen by influence makers is a difficult journey. Hosting a congressional screening on such a controversial political subject has never been done in Washington DC and there are many who, for their own political purposes, do not want this film seen. We are already facing a rallying of forces that oppose the screening and want to sweep history under the rug. Rest assured, with your continued support we will not let that happen.

Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions or would like to help.

Formosa Betrayed is a feature film detailing the murder investigation of a Taiwanese-American professor at a Midwestern college in the early 1980s. The detective assigned to the case is a young FBI agent whose search for the killers takes him to Taiwan, where he discovers that the true reason for the professor's murder was a political one. The hit was sanctioned by those at the highest level of power, to silence an outspoken advocate of Taiwanese democracy and independence and who was thus seen as a threat to the legitimacy of the government on Taiwan.

In his efforts to bring the killers and their accomplices to justice, the FBI agent finds himself on a collision course with the U.S. State Department, the Chinese Mafia, and ultimately the highest levels of the Nationalist Chinese Government in Taiwan. In the end, the detective begins to understand the complex nature of politics, identity, and power in Taiwan-US-China relations – and how this relationship affects the lives and destinies of the citizens of all three countries. Formosa Betrayed is a compelling motion picture that captures the historical importance of its story.
